When the light is flickering in and out in your head and the room you’re drunk in becomes a hub of chaos, you know you’re stuck in a low moment, breathing heavily and staving off strangers and their callous words. You must get out, get away from the space where your heart feels pressed dangerously in your chest, and the dizziness becomes too much to handle. This record from Ways Away tells us that there’s freedom on the horizon, a chance for luck to take order. Torch Songs is their collection, an LP proving that music can heal even when it’s as dark as this, as insightful and rough around the edges.
The band has created something memorable here, by instilling brazen lyrics and sheer angst. Torch Songs has that appeal though, that will appease the broken-hearted, the outcasts, and the people who walk through turbulent times. Mental health is also explored on this expansive album, and it can be an unnerving component, but one that should be spoken about. It’s evident that the band hurts and feels a plethora of problems circling in their minds.
