Six years after the release of their critically acclaimed album La Marupè, t o d returns with Silaga, a mini album comprising five dynamic and colourful tracks signalling their departure from the traditional "folk" genre. From La Marupè, to their single Songkabala and finally with Silaga - t o d has settled into their very own unique sound. A mix of folk, pop layered on top of ambient-electronic soundscapes interspersed with Fadly FM's traditional Makassar style vocals and Nugraha's melodic guitar solos. Combine these with Dian's hauntingly flexible vocals, and producer Reza Enem's magic touch invoking an air of mysticism to complete the signature sound of t o d.
The imagery captured in Silaga will take you places, to mountain tops and across oceans, as you delve deep into the ancient Bugis folklore. All of these aspects come together beautifully in a delirious trance in the final track, "Tau Assanro". The quality of the mix coupled with the Malay-Makassar music influence makes "Tau Assanro" my personal favourite Song of The Year, by a long mile.
The album has also made it onto Whiteboardjournal's list of Best Local Music of 2024 So Far.
